Y is for Yesim #AtoZchallenge

YDear Yesim-jan,

I’ve known you since 2007. Can you believe it? I remember you came for a meal in the house where I used to rent a room. A housemate was hosting you. I listened to your laughter and was inspired by your confidence.

Over the years, I got to know you better, mostly on a dance floor. We spoke a few words in Turkish from time to time. We hugged. We danced. You felt warm and close. And even though I didn’t stay to chat to you after classes, our souls communed when we danced. We expressed so much of ourselves on the dance floor, more than many do in a ‘normal’ conversation.

Then in 2010, we were a part of a year-long five rhythms dance group. Every two months, we stayed and danced together for several days in a row. You and I even shared a room. I appreciated your quiet companionship. It was soothing and safe. My favourite part of those retreats were… in the kitchen. We did dishes together from time to time, while singing Azerbaijani songs. ‘Azadlig’ (Freedom) is one of my favourites. ‘Ala gozlum’ (My green-eyed) is my absolute favourite. It was magical to share them with you. When we sang them together, I felt like I belonged, like somehow I was home.

Over these years, I admired you a lot. There’s a long list, but here are a few reasons why I love you so much:

  • Your parenting is a true inspiration to me. Your daughter is gorgeous. Your experience fills me with hope that having a painful childhood does not prevent us from raising healthy happy children.
  • Your femininity is beautiful. You are the first woman from my part of the world who revels in and loves her sexuality. It’s healthy and refreshing.
  • Your ‘I can do it’ attitude is great. There are no excuses. One day you decide to acquire a new profession. You get on and do it. It set a great example to your kid. It set a great example to me too.
  • Last but not least, your love for life and ability to enjoy it are amazing.

I know we are far away from each other right now, but I just wanted to let you know how much I love you. Look forward to catching up in the summer.

With love,

Gulara xx

    • Thank you, Gwynn, she is lovely. We haven’t danced for ages, as I couldn’t go to our classes in the evening, and now Yesim moved away. But we are as close as before and I look forward to seeing her in the summer. Thank you for reading. Glad you found the letters inspiring!
